Verdict reached in left behind object case

A patient can suffer great harm when hospitals and/or medical professionals act negligently in connection to a surgical procedure and such negligence results in a piece of surgical equipment being unintentionally left inside of the patient. Thus, it is extremely important for hospitals and medical professionals to do everything they reasonably can to ensure that patients aren't exposed to this type of negligence.

Recently, a verdict was reached in a Pennsylvania medical negligence case involving an alleged left behind object. The case involved a woman who reportedly underwent a cesarean section in March of 2004 at a Pennsylvania hospital.

The woman claimed that she received negligent care in connection to this procedure. Specifically, she alleged that a surgical sponge was negligently left inside of her.

The woman brought a lawsuit in Pennsylvania against the hospital and two nurses in connection to these allegations. A trial was held on this matter and the jury reached its decision. The jury ruled against the hospital and the two nurses and awarded the woman a monetary judgment.

No surgical patient should have to be subjected to having a piece of surgical equipment negligently left inside of him or her. Left behind objects can cause patients to suffer pain and can expose them to infections. Thus, one hopes that medical professionals and hospitals will do everything they can to avoid engaging in negligence like that alleged in the above-mentioned case. One also hopes medical professionals and hospitals are held accountable when they negligently leave a piece of surgical equipment behind in a patient.
