Pulmonary embolus symptoms and risk factors

A pulmonary embolus is a potentially deadly medical condition. Health care providers in Connecticut most often find a blood clot in the arteries of the lungs to be the cause. It blocks blood flow and restricts oxygen uptake in the patient.

Primary symptoms associated with a pulmonary embolus include chest pain, stinging chest pains and a heavy burning chest. The pain typically spikes when a deep breath is taken. Many other symptoms may also be experienced, such as dizziness, shortness of breath, swollen legs or fast heart rate.

A person who has a history of blood clots or comes from a family prone to them is most at risk. However, other conditions can trigger a clot to form and break off into the bloodstream. Some of them are breaks to the hips and thigh bones, childbirth, long periods of travel in a car or plane, cancer, post-surgery, deep vein thrombosis, and taking birth control pills or estrogen hormones.

Quick treatment of a pulmonary embolus is important. Someone experiencing symptoms should seek medical care, even at an emergency room. A doctor can determine if an embolus is present through the use of blood tests and several types of imaging tests.

Due to the possibly sudden onset of the condition, sometimes a person dies because it is not diagnosed and treated in a timely manner. When a person loses a loved one to such an error and believes that medical malpractice delayed detection of the embolus, he or she might consider a wrongful death claim. An attorney may be able to help such a client review medical records for evidence of negligence.
