More than 60 patients join malpractice case against dentist

Connecticut residents may be surprised to hear about a dentist who is being investigated on claims that he abused his patients and performed dental extractions on children without anesthesia. The dentist, who is based in Florida, was the only dentist in the Jacksonville area who both did pediatric dentistry and accepted Medicaid. There are now more than 60 former patients involved in the lawsuit.

People are also picketing the dentist's office, and the Department of Health is working to shut the office down. The dentist has already voluntarily given up his license.

Parents report that their children came from appointments with unexplained bruises and that the dentist was emotionally abusive as well. Allegedly, he dressed up to frighten children and threatened to hurt their mothers if he reported their behavior. One two-year-old boy who was taken to the dentist to have two broken teeth fixed instead had both teeth removed along with two additional teeth. Medicaid has been billed nearly $4 million in reimbursements by the dentist from 2010 to 2014. The dentist has been the focus of previous medical malpractice lawsuits. Two went to mediation and were dismissed. One was settled with cash.

Those who feels they or a loved one has suffered from medical malpractice may wish to consult an attorney. Cases of medical malpractice are not always as extreme as this one appears to be. Many might involve a misdiagnosis or other doctor error that results in a failure to observe the proper standard of care.
