Maternal mortality rates

Connecticut mothers-to-be may be interested to learn that maternal mortality rates in the U.S. have been on the rise instead of declining. Now, Americans are more than three times likelier to die during childbirth or from complications than are mothers in Japan, the United Kingdom and Germany, and almost twice as likely to die than mothers in some other developed countries.

Diagnostic errors could occur due to new COPD guidelines

As a disease is studied over time, changes in understanding could affect guidelines for diagnosing that condition. Such is the case for chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder. As Connecticut health care providers become familiar with these changes, implementation could be important for minimizing the risk of misdiagnosing patients. Health risks can exist in the case of an erroneous diagnosis of COPD as well as in the case of failing to identify COPD in a patient.

Steps to reduce risk of medical negligence injury

The goal may be curing illness and preventing death, but hospital errors are responsible for an estimated 400,000 fatalities each year. Connecticut residents intending to use hospital services can prepare in advance to reduce the risks of becoming part of this statistic. Others may simply want to understand the risks in the event they are called to look after a loved one facing emergency admittance to a health care facility.

Preventing medication errors by asking questions

When patients in Connecticut pick up prescription drugs from pharmacies, they are usually given the opportunity to ask questions of the pharmacist. Although many patients trust their doctor's recommendation, it is important to be informed about the potential side effects of prescription drugs before taking them. Checking that all of the information on a prescription drug bottle is correct is also a crucial safety precaution.

Anesthesiologist to pay $500,000 for mocking patient

Connecticut is what is known as a two-party consent state. This means that telephone calls or conversations may only be recorded if both parties consent. Virginia is a one-party consent state, and that distinction led to a six-figure judgement for a man who was mocked relentlessly during a colonoscopy in April 2013. The stream of insults was captured on a cellphone that the man had inadvertently left recording, and a jury felt that what they heard was no laughing matter as they ordered an anesthesiologist to pay $500,000 after a three day trial.
