The importance of early prostate cancer diagnosis

Connecticut men who are over the age of 40 are advised to schedule a prostate cancer screening once a year. Prostate cancer is a very common cancer in all males, and it is especially common in black men. To raise awareness about prostate cancer, September has been designated as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.

Though the best outcomes for prostate cancer are seen when it is diagnosed at an early stage, early prostate cancer cannot be identified by symptoms. The only way for a man to find out that he has early prostate cancer is to be screened by a doctor. A prostate cancer screening involves a blood test and a rectal examination. If prostate cancer is identified early on, it can be treated with radiation or surgery.

A man with prostate cancer that has progressed without a proper diagnosis may experience incontinence, erectile dysfunction, paralysis and blood in his urine. Once these kinds of symptoms present themselves, hormonal therapy could be used to treat the cancer. However, hormonal therapy has a number of negative side effects such as bone weakness, heart problems, hot flashes and enlarged breasts. Because of the side effects of late-stage prostate cancer treatments, it is much better to be diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early stage.

If a doctor fails to correctly diagnose a man during a prostate cancer screening, the consequences of the failure could be serious. A man who has suffered injuries because of a cancer misdiagnosis might want to talk to an attorney about filing a medical malpractice claim. An attorney may be able to help the injured patient identify the point in the medical history where the misdiagnosis occurred and pursue a claim for the full extent of damages.
