How to avoid some common hospital hazards

Although most people expect to get healthier when they visit a hospital in Connecticut, many patients are injured by medical mistakes and sickened by hospital infections. Every year, upwards of 400,000 people in the United States die as a direct result of hospital-related medical errors. Fatal hospital mistakes are so common in this country that they are actually the third-leading cause of death.

Anyone who visits a hospital should go prepared to pay attention and ask questions. If patients are too ill to look out for their own health while they are hospitalized, another person should always be there with them. Hospital patients can protect themselves from some of the most common hospital errors by writing down their medication prescriptions and checking their medications each time they are administered.

More than 50 percent of hospital patients are given antibiotics during their hospital stay, but about half of antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary. When patients receive too many antibiotics, they could become more susceptible to deadly 'superbug" infections that are prevalent in hospitals. Patients can protect themselves from the overuse of antibiotics by asking their doctor why antibiotics are being prescribed to them. If the doctor doesn't know the specific type of infection the patient has, the patient should ask them to do a rapid culture so that they can get the right antibiotics.

A patient who contracted an infection or sustained injuries during a hospital stay may want to meet with an attorney and discuss the advisability of filing a medical malpractice claim. Not all injuries or worsened medical conditions are a result of medical professional negligence, and the attorney will make a determination as to whether there was a failure to exhibit the requisite standard of care.
