New study seeks to improve presurgical breast MRI technique

Women in Connecticut about to undergo breast cancer surgery might be interested in the details that go into their surgical planning. A recent study of breast MRIs produced results that suggested that patient positioning during the procedure could influence the accuracy of the scans. Scan data might be distorted when patients undergo the MRI while face down. Scans taken of a patient who is face up might give a surgeon a more detailed view of breast tissues and tumors.

Universal standards for medication administration

Many of the 1.5 million people who are harmed by medication mistakes annually in U.S. hospitals receive them while they receive care from different departments. Connecticut patients should be aware that a cause of these errors, which often involve the erroneous administration of medicine taken intravenously or orally, is the absence of universal standards.

Diagnosing dehydration in the elderly

A common medical problem that elderly people in Connecticut sometimes suffer from is dehydration. Elderly people may be more prone to suffering from dehydration for several reasons. They may have lower thirst sensations because of diabetes, kidney issues, medications and simply forgetting to eat or drink regularly.

Being proactive about medical errors

To avoid being injured by medical errors, patients in Connecticut and around the country may want to ask more questions during their treatment. For example, they may ask about the training and experience of their surgeon and ask why doctors are recommending a particular procedure. Patients can also double check their prescription before taking medication and ask questions before agreeing to take a diagnostic test.
