Important progress for breast cancer patients

Breast cancer awareness has become an important issue in Connecticut and across the country, and research continues to play a major role in improving the prospects for those affected by the disease. 2016 has been a year of advances that could have helpful implications for some breast cancer patients as the areas of genetics, testing, and treatments have all had experienced positive outcomes. While there is still much progress needed, the latest efforts offer hope in the battle against this disease.

A cancer misdiagnosis could lead to deadly results, especially if an aggressive form of breast cancer is missed. Research at Cambridge Research Institute has provided a great deal of helpful information about genetic links to breast cancer. The team working on the project identified more than 90 genes with these links. Mutations in these genes could cause a transformation from normal to cancerous in a breast cell. Meanwhile, researchers have made discoveries that could help in developing blood tests to identify breast cancer in the near future. This could provide patients with greater diagnostic accuracy that could minimize the risk of misdiagnosis.

One of the most exciting developments has been the use of combined drug therapies to treat breast cancer patients. A study based in the U.K. involved the use of two drugs to treat 257 women struggling with an aggressive form of breast cancer. In 11 percent of these patients, all signs of the disease were completely gone in approximately 11 days. The timing and effectiveness in these particular patients offers great hope for advances with other combination therapies.

Because of the serious implications of breast cancer, a patient typically needs the best information available to move forward with treatment decisions. If a provider delays in scheduling procedures or tests needed to make time-sensitive decisions, a patient might suffer a worsened condition as the disease spreads to other parts of her body. Women who have been harmed in such a manner might want to have legal assistance in seeking appropriate compensation.
