Diagnosing penile cancer

When Connecticut men show the signs or symptoms of penile cancer, it is highly recommended that they go to a doctor in order to get examined. If doctors have reason to believe that a patient could have penile cancer, they may order certain tests in order to diagnose it.

Prior to getting any testing done, the doctor may look at the patient's medical history. The doctor may then examine the area to look for possible signs of cancer or other formalities. For example, the practitioner may look or feel the lymph nodes to see if there are any signs of swelling. If abnormalities are present, the doctor may order further testing.

Before penile cancer can be diagnosed, a biopsy will need to be performed. During this procedure, a small piece of tissue will be removed and sent to a lab. If the abnormal area is small, the entire lesion may be removed. If the abnormal area is much larger or is ulcerated, only a small portion of the abnormal area may be removed. Imaging tests, such as a CT scan, MRI or ultrasound, may be completed to determine the stage of the cancer and to see if the cancer has spread to other parts of the body.

A failure to diagnose cancer in a timely manner can result in a worsened medical condition if the disease is left untreated. The cancer could metastasize to other parts of the man's body and could ultimately prove to be fatal. The surviving family members of a patient who has died due to this type of mistake may want to meet with a medical malpractice attorney to see what recourse they may have.
