Causes of strokes

According to statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, strokes kill more than 130,000 people a year in Connecticut and the rest of nation. This figure equates to 1 out of every 20 deaths in the U.S. Although every stroke that occurs is not fatal, they can eventually result in death or any number of lifelong disabilities.

Some of the most common causes of strokes include high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, old age and high cholesterol. Other conditions, such as heart valve disease and atrial fibrillation, can also contribute to a stroke.

The United States spends nearly $33 billion on health care costs each year since two-thirds of the population possesses at least one of the conditions or engages in a habit that can cause a stroke. This amount includes the costs of stroke medication, days taken off from work and health care services.

Out of the 795,000 people in the United States who have strokes each year, it is the first one for 610,000 of them. Individuals who are over the age of 65 make up a large portion of stroke victims.

Although people who are 45 and younger have a reduced 1-in-1,000 risk of having a stroke, there has been a sharp rise in individuals in their 30s and 40s having them. This is due to an increase in diabetes, abnormal blood clotting, obesity, smoking, sleep apnea and high blood pressure. There are also other contributing factors, like genetics, abuse of alcohol or drugs and ruptured aneurysms.

A personal injury attorney may file a medical malpractice claim on behalf of a client who experienced a worsened medical condition or unnecessary treatment due to a misdiagnosis. Damages may also be pursued for anesthesia or surgical errors or any other medical mistakes that resulted in death.
