How Can I Recognize That a Nursing Home Is Negligent?

If you have a loved one in a nursing home in Connecticut, you no doubt expect the best care possible. Sadly, this is not always the case; while most assisted living facilities go above and beyond in terms of care, instances of neglect and even abuse are all too common. That's why NextAvenue.com urges family with relatives in nursing homes to be on the lookout for the following indications that staff may be negligent.

Mental or Emotional Distress

If your loved one is being routinely neglected by staff, this can manifest in physical or emotional distress. In many cases residents being neglected will appear depressed or even anxious for no real reason, and with no prior history of mental issues. Any stark emotional changes should be assessed right away, especially they're interfering with your loved one's ability to lead a normal life.

Malnutrition and Dehydration

Elderly residents of nursing homes also often need help with meal prep. If this help is unavailable, serious physical issues can occur, and for some these issues can be deadly. Nursing home staff must provide access to nutritious meals, as well as plenty of clean drinking water and other fluids. When proper sustenance is not available health issues can develop quickly, especially when neglect is ongoing.

Decreasing Mobility

Staff is also responsible for helping residents get around the home, in addition to assisting with exercise and physical therapy. For many residents, mobility is a real issue, and often poses a threat to maintaining a healthy level of physical activity. Not only do staff need to make sure that residents with limited mobility are well-protected as they make their way around the home, but they should also take steps to help retain the current level of mobility a senior currently possesses.
