How Can I Reduce My Risk of Medication Errors?

Many in people in Connecticut and all over the country take medications on a daily basis. Errors related to medication can occur on every level, from the original prescription to the methods for dispensing drugs. Because medication errors can be dangerous in many cases, the Mayo Clinic offers the following tips.

Numerous medication errors occur because of poor communication between medical staff and patients, even among doctors themselves. In this case, the best way to prevent a mistake from occurring is to ask the right questions of medical staff if anything seems unclear. For instance, you should be fully aware of the correct dosage for any medications you take. If you're unsure, ask your doctor to clarify before leaving the appointment.

You should also be aware of the any generic versions of a medication. It's common for the pharmacy to provide generic alternatives to brand name prescriptions, and you want to be sure you're getting the correct drug. Names of medications can be similar, and knowing the generic name will prevent you from receiving the incorrect prescription.

It's also important for you to be forthcoming with your doctor about your medical history. If you're currently taking any drugs, be sure to provide a list of prescriptions (some medications cannot be taken together). Additionally, be sure to tell your doctor if you're allergic to any drugs. If so, he or she can prescribe another medicine, or determine a better course of treatment. While medications are essential for the managment of your health, they can also cause complications on their own. That's why it's so important that patients take a proactive role in their health care, which will afford the best results.
