A closer look at why doctors make mistakes

When people in Connecticut recognize an immediate need to see a doctor, they place a high amount of trust in their medical provider to give them a thorough assessment before making a diagnosis and recommending treatment. However, accidents can happen along the way and in serious cases, doctor errors can result in debilitating injury or even death for unsuspecting patients.

According to The Washington Post, medical errors can be incredibly serious from doctors prescribing the wrong medication, to mixing up patient's medications, even to performing surgeries on the incorrect body part. In fact, the problem is so serious that medical errors are now the third leading causes of death in the United States.

While there are many reasons why a doctor could make a mistake, Consumer Reports shares some of the common reasons including the following:

  • A doctor is interrupted by other staff members or patients or experiences a lapse in communication.
  • A doctor only considers the beginning of a patient's description of his or her symptoms before making a diagnosis.
  • A doctor is overwhelmed or managing a large caseload that requires him or her to rush.
  • A doctor allows stereotypes to affect his or her judgment in making a decision about someone's medical treatment.

People can protect themselves from becoming a victim of medical malpractice by bringing someone with them to all appointments, doing research of their own, asking questions and regularly monitoring their progress after receiving treatment. When patients are prepared and make sure they follow up with their doctor regarding any medical tests that were run, they can encourage timely response from their medical provider.
