Even though labor and delivery may be the most difficult and dangerous parts of the childbirth process, mothers and newborn infants should still be closely monitored for postpartum complications for some time afterward. Too often, however, mothers and babies do not receive the proper care during this critical period and suffer serious damage as a result.
At Wocl Leydon, LLC, we hold negligent physicians, hospitals and other licensed health care providers accountable for the harm they have caused by failing to follow appropriate standards of postpartum care. If you are concerned that you or your baby suffered injuries as a result of a medical professional’s negligence, contact us and schedule a confidential consultation with one of our birth injury lawyers.

Common but potentially life-threatening postpartum complications that mothers can develop after childbirth include:
- Hemorrhaging or hemorrhagic shock
- Pulmonary embolisms
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Infections (reproductive or urinary tract system infections, puerperal infections and others)
- Endometritis (inflammation of the uterus)
- Surgical and postoperative complications of C-section procedures
Babies can develop postpartum complications as well, including jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia) and hypoglycemia. Infants who were born prematurely and those born with respiratory system disorders are in the highest risk category. Less frequently, signs of hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy and associated brain impairment become apparent over the months following birth.
Our AV Preeminent* litigation firm has longstanding relationships with medical professionals and other experts who can help us evaluate the medical record and determine whether a doctor or hospital was negligent and failed to provide competent postpartum care.
