Preeclampsia & Placental Abruption

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-related medical condition that can develop in women beginning at about the 20th week up until about six weeks after birth. Medically, this condition is characterized by high blood pressure, sometimes referred to as PIH or pregnancy-induced hypertension. Other symptoms include protein in the urine, swelling, sudden weight gain, headaches and changes in vision. The only “cure” for preeclampsia is childbirth. The condition and its side effects can usually be managed effectively with medications, bed rest or both.

Untreated, preeclampsia can lead to the development of full-blown eclampsia or HELLP Syndrome and may result in brain damage, damage to internal organs such as the kidneys or liver, placental abruption, coma and death. When preeclampsia is accompanied by fetal macrosomia (high birth weight), there is an increased risk of shoulder dystocia (Erb’s palsy), which in turn heightens the risk of a severe brachial plexus injury to the child.

Bridgeport Placental Abruption Lawyers ∙ Stamford Preeclampsia Attorneys

Although high blood pressure, protein in the urine and other symptoms can be used to diagnose preeclampsia, many women with this condition do not experience these symptoms in noticeable ways. In many situations, avoiding risks during delivery will depend on careful monitoring at various stages of pregnancy. This is especially important for expectant mothers in known high-risk groups, including:

  • Women for whom this is the first pregnancy
  • Older mothers
  • For placental abruption, abdominal trauma
  • Mothers carrying two or more fetuses
  • Mothers who have developed diabetes during pregnancy (gestational diabetes mellitus)
  • Mothers who have a history or family history of blood pressure disorders
