As a founding member of the National Academy of Motorcycle Injury Lawyers (NAMIL), our firm is uniquely qualified to provide legal representation to injured motorcyclists.

Time and time again we’ve witnessed the physical, emotional, and financial impact that injuries have on our clients and their families. For this reason, we are committed to doing our part to help prevent accidents from happening in the first place. If you plan on taking advantage of the summer riding season, know these motorcycle safety tips.

Dress the Part of a Motorcyclist

Motorcyclists wear leather clothing for a reason: it’s thick and protective. If you are involved in an accident in which you skid or are dragged down the road, heavy clothing guards against serious road rash injuries.

Though Connecticut does not have universal helmet laws, it is clear that wearing one is a smart idea. While helmets come in a couple of different varieties, we always recommend full-face helmets. A full-face helmet ensures that your head and face are both protected.

Dragging incidents can easily leave victims with facial disfigurements and serious soft tissue injuries. When riders are thrown from their bike or struck by a vehicle, serious brain injury scan result. These injuries can be diminished or avoided entirely with the use of a full-face helmet.

Nonskid soled boots and gloves also provide much-needed protection. To make yourself more visible at any time of day, you can affix reflective tape or decals to your clothing.

Be Observant on Connecticut Roads

The majority of motorcycle accidents are caused by careless drivers. This puts motorcyclists at a disadvantage when sharing the road with other motorists. When you set out on your motorcycle, you should be mentally sharp, alert, and not under the influence of drugs or alcohol

Continually scan your surroundings, trust your instincts, and keep the following in mind:

  • Don’t assume that other drivers see you.
  • Stay out of drivers’ blind spots.
  • Signal with plenty of advance notice.
  • Remain aware of the road surface.

Left turns also pose a threat to motorcyclists. If you are making a left turn across oncoming traffic, make sure that you have plenty of time before other vehicles approach. If you have any doubts about whether you can make it in time, waiting is always worth it.

Check Your Motorcycle Before You Ride

Regular maintenance, oil changes, and vehicular repairs are just as important for motorcyclists as they are for all other motorists. Before getting on the road, perform the following safety checks:

  • Be wary of any bulging, cracking, low pressure, or any objects that may be lodged into your tires. This is a quick check that could save you from serious trouble down the road.
  • Leakage – Check beneath your motorcycle for signs of oil or gas leakage. Though some spots beneath your motorcycle are normal, excessive fluid is not.
  • Headlight, Taillight, and Signal Functionality – These lights are your main tools for visibility and communication on the road. Make sure they’re working before you need them.</span
  • Coolant, Oil, and Hydraulic Fluid – Check these levels weekly and replace when needed.

Once you’re on your motorcycle, before taking off, do a quick check of your mirrors, brakes, horn, clutch, and throttle. If you have any concerns with how these parts are functioning address them before setting out.
